When will Children be allowed to be Children?
A Decade In - Time For Renewed Effort...
War Child is 10 years old this year but this is no reason for celebration.
For a child in sub-Saharan Africa to make it to 10 years old is a major achievement. 1 in 6 die before theyīre half that age. And in the 10 years since we opened in North America, 31 wars have raged and manīs brutality towards children has, if anything, intensified. From rape as a weapon of war against girls well under 10 years old, to the almost commonplace use of children as front-line īsoldiersī, to the targeting of children and their communities as a matter of course, the threats to childrenīs lives and well-being only increase as we develop more lethal and immoral ways of waging war.
Networked Nutt
War Child founder, Dr Samantha Nutt, has embraced the new connected world of social media in a big way. She recently started a blog that she will be updating at least once a month. Issues discussed so far - the fate of Canadian Guantanamo prisoner, Omar Khadr, and whether increased aid to Africa was just a passing fashion?
Her next foray into the Geek landscape was signing up to Twitter as @NuttsAtWarChild. Follow her now for Tweets on everything from the International Criminal Court to the restaurant at Thunder Bay airport.
In the next few days, Sam will be travelling to one of War Childīs programs, situated in a particularly treacherous war zone. She will be tweeting from the ground while sheīs there (technology permitting) and when she gets back we will be hosting a live chat with her about her trip. We want you to join in the discussion and ask Sam your questions. Keep your eye out for details at www.warchildheroes.net. If you already know what you want to ask, email james at warchild dot ca or tweet @TopsAtWarChild.

Already, War Child has used Aeroplan Miles to send staff to visit our School Rehabilitation project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and our Legal Aid Program in northern Uganda in order to fully assess the programsī success and investigate opportunities for expansion.
