Table Grape Scholarship Recipients Ready for College

FRESNO, California – The California Table Grape Commission recently awarded three $16,000 college scholarships to high school graduates in California´s fresh grape growing region.

The 2010 scholarship recipients are:

Mariela Ceballos Magaña, a graduate from Coachella Valley High School, who will be attending the University of California, Los Angeles to pursue a career in medicine. She moved to the U.S. from San Pedro, Michoacán, Mexico with her family when she was four years old. She is the oldest of three and will be the first in her family to attend college.

Celene Mendez, a graduate from Parlier High School, who will be attending the University of California, Santa Barbara to become an orthodontist. Her motivation comes from her parents´ dedication to work long hours in order to get both her and her brother through school.


Gerardo Tinoco, a graduate from Arvin High School, who will be attending the University of California, Berkeley to study civil engineering. He plans to design and construct canals and dams in order to better satisfy water needs for future generations of farm workers.

Since becoming the first farm worker scholarship of its kind in 1985, the California Table Grape Workers´ Scholarship program has awarded nearly $1 million, helping over 85 students from California obtain a higher education.
