How to Shop Till You Drop and Benefit the Arts at the Same Time

PASADENA, Calif. As longtime fans of the Pasadena Showcase House of Design are well aware, a day at Showcase involves much more than touring an estate where every room and garden has been transformed not only into a masterpiece of design but a breathtaking work of art. There are also the Shops at Showcase, where this year over 30 vendors from throughout California – and even as far away as Arizona – will offer an array of items ranging from eyeglasses, designer clothing and accessories to aprons and olive oil.

Vendors taking part in the 2010 Pasadena Showcase House of Design include: Accessor Eyes; Bedhead Pajamas; Brighton; Designer Sterling; DJ Giles, Fashion Wrap and Accessories; D-Lux 57; Gallery of Wearable Art; Gourmet Blends; Herban Body Care; Holland Boone; Iveta Gourmet, Inc; JP Designs; Kohala Plantation, Inc.; Lavender Blue, Inc.; Little Miss Bling Bling; Louise´s Hats; Material Things; Mark & Stephen´s; Model Metalworks, Inc.; Once Upon A Time; Paco Soler; Plantation House; Precious Gem; Susie O´s; Tara Lyn on Lake; The Yearsley Company; Treasured Accessory; Two Dog Organic Nursery; Veronica´s Garden; Willis & Bennett, Inc.; and Wick´d Bean Candles.

"Many of our vendors are old friends of Showcase and it´s always such a pleasure to welcome them back," says Marilyn Anderson, co-chair of The Shops at Showcase. "But it´s always exciting to introduce our visitors to new merchants as well. Just as every Pasadena Showcase House of Design is unique each year, so is our marketplace."

For Terri Kohl of Brighton, the allure of Showcase is not so much mercantile as the opportunity to change lives. "I love the Pasadena Showcase House of Design," says Kohl, who joined the roster of vendors in 1999. "It´s the only event we do. We enjoy seeing the lovely home every year, but what we admire most of all is how Showcase has supported music programs for our kids for over 60 years."

Meanwhile Dominique Boone of Holland Boone has traveled all the way from Scottsdale, Arizona to participate in the Shops at Showcase. "We were intrigued by the entire concept of the Showcase House and we always love supporting the arts, so we decided to give it a try," Boone recalls. "Fifteen years later we are still traveling to the show because we love the wonderful customers who attend the event. Also, the overall atmosphere of the event is fun and festive and the weather is usually gorgeous, so our employees love getting an all-expense paid trip to California!"

But more than Holland Boone´s employees benefit from a visit to the Shops at Showcase, adds co-chair Mary Anne Clayton. "The whole point of Showcase is to raise as much money as possible for musical arts organizations throughout Southern California," says Clayton. "So of course we want our customers to purchase as many items as possible. But the good news is that since the monies raised will be donated, 25% of what our visitors spend is tax deductible."

To date, the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA) has donated over $17 million to the arts. These range from larger institutions like the Los Angeles Philharmonic and LA Opera to local high school music departments, libraries and music therapy programs at hospitals, senior centers and foster care facilities.

In addition, PSHA funds three annual music programs – the Pasadena Showcase House Music Mobile TM, an award-winning program introducing 3rd graders throughout the San Gabriel Valley to the instruments of the orchestra; The Pasadena Showcase House Youth Concert, a free performance by the LA Philharmonic for 4th grade students at Walt Disney Concert Hall; and the Instrumental Competition, where exceptionally talented musicians, aged 16 to 24, compete for monetary prizes to further their music education.

"Supporting the Shops at Showcase is a great way to shop till you drop and have absolutely no buyers remorse," says Delise Menik, a PSHA member who works as a business consultant and is currently serving as President of the organization. "Everyone benefits."

ABOUT THE PASADENA SHOWCASE HOUSE FOR THE ARTS

An all-volunteer organization, the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA) is a non-profit California Corporation whose members donate their time and talents to produce the annual Pasadena Showcase House of Design. Founded in 1948 and formerly known as The Pasadena Junior Philharmonic Committee, the organization adopted the Pasadena Showcase House of Design as its annual benefit in 1965. Since then, it has become one of the oldest, largest and most successful house and garden tours in the nation.

The women of PSHA are united by their belief in the power and beauty of music. Together, they work to provide funding for programs that nurture the study and appreciation of music, utilize music as a means to heal and enhance health, encourage the use of music in the classroom to promote learning and ensure that music is available to as broad an audience as possible, from toddlers to senior citizens.
