10 Days Left to Nominate a Hero for Citizen Service Above Self Honors

National Desk
WASHINGTON – The nominations period for the Citizen Service Above Self Honors closes on Friday, February 12, 2010. Nominations must be received by then to be considered for 2010. The Citizen Service Above Self Honors recognizes and honors ordinary Americans who have become extraordinary through their indomitable courage and selflessness. Citizens may nominate a citizen hero by completing the online form, www.CitizenServiceAboveSelfHonors.org.

The Congressional Medal of Honor Society, consisting exclusively of America´s fewer than 100 living Medal of Honor recipients, encourages individuals to nominate any citizen who has clearly demonstrated a willingness to sacrifice for others whether through a single act of extraordinary heroism at risk to one´s life or through a prolonged series of selfless acts on behalf of their fellow citizens. The nominee´s actions must epitomize the concept of "service above self" and must be performed "above and beyond" one´s professional area of responsibility or conduct.

The Citizen Service Above Self Honors program is just one way America´s Medal of Honor recipients can recognize ordinary citizens who have gone above and beyond in their daily lives. It is their way of thanking America for raising sons and daughters who have within them the same ideals of courage and selflessness they demonstrated in combat years ago.

All nominations will be considered, and a slate of national finalists will be announced on Tuesday, March 9, 2010. From among those finalists, a panel of America´s living Medal of Honor recipients will select three individuals to receive Citizen Service Above Self Honors. The three honorees will be announced on Monday, March 22, 2010 and honored at a ceremony on Thursday, March 25, 2010, at 2 p.m. EDT, in conjunction with National Medal of Honor Day. The ceremony will be held in the shadow of the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington Cemetery in Washington, DC.

Profiles for each of the finalists will be available on the Citizen Service Above Self Honors Web site, www.CitizenServiceAboveSelfHonors.org, and each finalist will receive an embossed certificate signed by the President of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society.

The Congressional Medal of Honor Society is chartered by Congress, and regarded as the most exclusive organization in our country, as its membership is solely made up of living Medal of Honor recipients. Today, there are fewer than 100 members, who come from all social classes, race and economic levels. They range in age from 59 to 100, and live in all areas of our country. No amount of money, power or influence can buy one's rite of passage to this exclusive circle, and unlike almost any other organization, this group's members hope that there will be no more inductees. The Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is to perpetuate the Medal of Honor´s legacy of courage, sacrifice and patriotism. The Foundation supports the objectives, activities and programs of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, and raises funds for initiatives such as Citizen Service Above Self Honors, that promote awareness of what the Medal of Honor represents.
