National Peace Corps Association Sets up Online Resources for Haiti Recovery Efforts
Washington, D.C. - The National Peace Corps Association (NPCA), a membership-based alumni organization that serves all returned Peace Corps Volunteers and former staff, as well as Peace Corps family, friends, and supporters, announced today it has created a designated section on its Web site called, Haiti Disaster Response, to leverage the expertise and knowledge of former Peace Corps Volunteers to help support recovery efforts in Haiti. In total, over 500 Peace Corps volunteers have served in Haiti since 1982.
NPCA encourages all Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCV´s) who served in Haiti, as well as other former volunteers, to visit NPCA´s Web site http://community.peacecorpsconnect.org/ and participate in an ongoing discussion on the current situation in Haiti and the emergency relief efforts needed on the ground. NPCA is also updating its Twitter and Facebook profiles regularly with updates from the RPCV community on the latest with regards to the current situation in Haiti http://www.twitter.com/pcorpsconnect / http://www.facebook.com/PeaceCorpsConnect.
In addition, NPCA has posted updates on Haiti on its Polyglot blog http://peacecorpsconnect.typepad.com/including an update on Matt Marek who is currently in Port-au-Prince and works as director of programs with the American Red Cross in Haiti. He served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Haiti from ´00 –´02 and worked for NPCA as operations manager for two years.
The staff at NPCA believe by mobilizing former Peace Corps volunteers who served in Haiti and around the world, RPCV´s can contribute in beneficial ways to the ongoing discussion on how to best pave a road to recovery for a country in havoc.
The Peace Corps does not currently have a program in Haiti, but was in the country during the periods of 1982-87, 1990-91 and 1996-2005.
NPCA is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization connecting, informing and engaging returned Peace Corps Volunteers, former Peace Corps staff and friends of Peace Corps committed to fostering peace through service, education and advocacy. The NPCA network also includes 140 member groups across the U.S. To learn more, visit: http://www.peacecorpsconnect.org
