Workers Rally for California Jobs

Labor Desk
Long Beach, CA – On Thursday, December 10, 2009, members of the Communications Workers of America (CWA) will march and rally for good, middle-class jobs outside a Verizon call center 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in Long Beach, 200 W Ocean Blvd. The event was called after recent announcements by both Verizon and AT&T to move more than 300 Los Angeles area jobs to other states – jobs that support California families and small businesses as well as government services through employee payroll taxes.

CWA is expecting 150-200 demonstrators to attend the rally come rain or shine.

CWA, along with key state legislators, have called on the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to investigate the moves after both of the telecommunications giants promised to create thousands of new jobs for California workers after receiving state-wide franchise authority for the delivery of video services. Verizon´s video product is called FiOS. AT&T´s product is called U-Verse. The state legislature provided these companies a way to bypass traditional municipal franchising in 2006 based largely on their promises of job creation. The companies claim that there have been jobs created directly related to the delivery of video to homes, job losses in other areas have more than offset any of these gains.

Workers whose jobs are being eliminated will be joined by political figures from Southern California. Elected officials include Long Beach City Council member Tonia Reyes-Uranga and Carson City Council member Mike Gibson who will share how the loss of jobs will affect their communities. Statements will also be delivered from other Congressional, Assembly and union representatives in the region.

CWA represents approximately 23,000 AT&T employees and 6000 Verizon employees in California. The union has more than 700,000 members nationwide.
