MOVIE REVIEW: Doubt

12/27/2008 10:32 PM
Doubt is in the hunt for Oscar nominations, especially for its high-powered cast of Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Viola Davis. Doubt is written and directed by John Patrick Shanley (who won the 1988 Oscar for Moonstruck) and adapted the screenplay from his own play, Doubt: A Parable, which won the Pulitzer, Drama Desk and Tony awards in 2005. However, I have doubts about Doubt the movie. As a film director, Shanley is an excellent screenwriter. It is true that Streep is amazing in the lead role of Sister Aloysius that won Cherry Jones the 2005 Tony award while fellow Oscar winner Hoffman matches her in scene after scene as Father Flynn. Many people are touting the chances of Davis to be nominated for (and possibl... more

The majority of Venezuelan citizens voted for candidates aligned with the Ch.vez government. Due to this broad popular support, the PSUV and its allies won 77 percent of governorships and 80 percent of mayoralties. Obama's Challenges Are Unprecedented in U.S. History

Few incoming presidents have been left by their predecessors with as many challenges as Barack Obama. In fact, with the daunting terrain facing the incoming president, one wonders why Obama and John McCain even wanted the office. Other presidents facing an uphill task when taking office were: — George Washington, who had to hold the 13 new states together long enough to get the republic firmly established. — Martin Van Buren, who had to deal with the economic panic of 1837, which originated from the inflationary and excessive monetary and credit expansion by his predecessor Andrew Jackson. — Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, and Ulysses S. D.j. vu for California's Budget, Terminator-Style

11/21/2008 01:22 AM
By William F. Shughart II Those wearing green eyeshades in Sacramento seem to think that by taxing and spending more they can "create" jobs and reverse the current economic downturn. Yet California has been in the doldrums and state revenues have been flat or shrinking over the past few years not because its government is too small, but because it is too big. The latest budget crunch, along with Gov. Schwarzenegger's package of ad hoc responses to it, should be proof positive, if further proof were needed, that prosperity will return to the state only when government gets out of the way. With $11.2 billion in red ink just six weeks after the budget for this fiscal year was signed into law, things aren't quite so dire as they were when... more

Washington, D.C. Is a Fourth Amendment-Free Zone

11/11/2008 3:55 PM
While the Fourth Amendment guarantees "the right of the people to be secure in their persons ... and effects against unreasonable searches and seizures," the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) made it clear earlier this week that the Constitution does not apply in D.C. According to Metro Transit Police Chief Michael Taborn, "Inspections could take place at any Metrorail station or Metrobus stop. They will be random, unannounced and focused on explosive detection." While the justification supplied for ignoring the Constitution was one of deterring terrorists, the unfortunate reality is that this gross violation of rights is likely to be completely ineffective. What We Owe Our Soldiers

11/07/2008 8:18 PM
Every Veterans Day we pay tribute to our fellow Americans who have served in the military. With speeches and ceremonies, we recognize their courage and valor. But justice demands that we also recognize that we should have far more living veterans than we do. All too many of our soldiers have died unnecessarily--because they were sent to fight for a purpose other than America's freedom. The proper purpose of a government is to protect its citizens' lives and freedom against the initiation of force by criminals at home and aggressors abroad. The American government has a sacred responsibility to recognize the individual value of every one of its citizens' lives, and thus to do everything possible to protect the rights of each to life, libe... more

11/07/2008 4:49 PM
Antwerp - More than 80 activists placed thousands of windmills with the message to "Quit Coal" at the site of E.ON's proposed coal fired power-plant in Antwerp Harbour. The action illustrates the choice facing Flemish authorities: authorise the construction of a huge coal power plant, or invest in wind power and greater energy independence. This afternoon, a Greenpeace delegation will meet with the Cabinet of Flemish Minister President, Kris Peeters, to debate how Flanders and Belgium can move to a future free of coal and nuclear power. "It's a question of good governance. The current environment impact report process [1] is meaningless.
