When Suicide Takes a Child

For twenty-three years I have grappled with my identity as a mother of a son who took his own life. I am also a woman, a sister, a child, a writer, an activist. I have met many life challenges, yet the scars and weight of the loss of my son make other assaults on the body or soul insignificant in comparison. As a long-term member and interim chapter leader for The Compassionate Friends of Marin County, California, I spoke recently with a woman who was beside herself trying to figure out what to do and where to go ... "Wherever I go there I am!" syndrome I call it. Below are some of my thoughts about losing a child to suicide. The gist I shared with the caller and she said she felt better by the end of our conversation. I believe she is ... more

Phoenix lights UFO: Misperception, test or acclimation?

(This article originally appeared on the Joint Recon Study Group site.) What was flying over Arizona and Phoenix the evening of March 13, 1997? Was it a formation of several aircraft with odd bright lights? If so, there seem to be several unusual aspects to the flight. Was it one huge triangle, boomerang or V-shaped craft? If so, was it a U.S. advanced aircraft or spacecraft of some kind? Was it an extraterrestrial craft? Was it some combination of both? The so-called "Phoenix lights" case is widely recognized as one of the more interesting incidents involving unidentified flying objects. The upcoming 13th anniversary of the incident on Saturday, March 13, 2010, offers an opportunity to review and consider a range of informa... more

Love to Love you Safely: Condoms Reduce STD Transmission and Unwanted Pregnancy

As sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and unwanted pregnancy rates continue to rise, the need for education about the use of condoms remains clear. Research has shown that consistent and correct use of male latex condoms can reduce the risk of STD transmission by 98 percent and is equally useful in the prevention of pregnancy when used in conjunction with a spermicide. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates 19 million new STD infections each year in the U.S. — half of them in 15 to 24-year-olds. The cost of STDs is estimated to be $15.9 billion annually according to the CDC, "Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance, 2008." INHOFE INTRODUCES HELP ACT TO ADDRESS FEDERAL SPENDING CRISIS

"The clock is ticking. Congress must act." WASHINGTON, D.C. ... Citing out-of-control deficit spending by the federal government, U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) introduced the Honest Expenditure Limitation Program (HELP) Act of 2010 to rein in government spending. The act, co-sponsored by Sens. Burr (R-N.C.) and Barrasso (R-Wy.), would result in nearly $900 billion in savings over a 10 year period. "If we do nothing to curtail skyrocketing government spending, or merely freeze it at artificially elevated levels for a few years, as President Obama proposes, we will find ourselves in a tragic situation," Inhofe said. "The clock is ticking. Congress must act. By reducing non-security discretionary spending levels to 2008 levels, and... more

FOREST FEE INCREASE FOR SENIORS SCRAPPED

Idaho delegation pushed for rescission of plan to drop discounts Washington, DC ... Idaho's congressional delegation says the decision by the U.S. Forest Service to scrap a proposal to cut discount pass rates available to senior citizens and disabled Americans is a good one. The Forest Service was reviewing a proposal to reduce discounts under the Interagency Pass Program and Golden Age and Golden Access Passports from 50% down to 10% for programs and services operated by Forest Service concessionaries. However, today, the delegation heard from the Forest Service that the proposal has been dropped and the current discounts will remain in place. Senator Mike Crapo said, "Idahoans and people across the West spoke loud and clear in op... more

Cochran Argues that Earmark Moratorium is Abdication of Responsibility to Executive Branch

Senate Votes Down Effort to Halt Congressionally-Directed Spending WASHINGTON, D.C. ... U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.), vice chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, strongly argued against a proposal that would effectively impose a moratorium on how Congress uses earmarks to appropriate funding for programs and projects within the federal government. The Senate on Tuesday voted with Cochran (68-29) to table an amendment sponsored by Senator Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) that would have placed a one-year moratorium on earmarks. The amendment was offered to the FAA Reauthorization Act (HR.1586). "Earmarking has nothing to do with how much the federal government spends, but has everything to do with who decides," Cochran said i... more

DELEGATION, GOVERNOR NOTE SAGE GROUSE EFFORTS

Call on Interior to stand firm on existing ruling in face of lawsuit Washington, D.C. ... Idaho's Congressional Delegation and Governor C.L. "Butch" Otter are calling on Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to stand firm on his department's justified "warranted but precluded" ruling regarding protections for sage grouse. In a letter to Salazar, Idaho Senators Mike Crapo and Jim Risch, Congressman Mike Simpson and Walt Minnick, and Governor Otter pointed to Idaho's wide-ranging, collaborative on-the-ground efforts that have improved habitat for the sage grouse and provide rationale for the agency's determinations about listing. "In 1996, the State of Idaho became one of the first states in the country to develop a comprehensive plan for co... more

Sen. Jim Inhofe: What Real Spending Restraint Looks Like

American families and state governments across the country are cutting spending and making hard decisions about their budgets. It is time the federal government did the same. Unfortunately, Congress has long demonstrated an innate incompetence in restraining itself. And a proposal to curb spending that is being floated by many of my colleagues-a one year moratorium on earmarks, those special provisions members insert into bills to direct funds to their districts or states - will do no good. An earmark moratorium won't save any money. Why? Because instead of reducing the federal budget, it will empower Obama administration bureaucrats to spend the funds members of Congress would have sent home through earmarks. Also, last year's earmar... more

SENATORS WANT U.S. BEEF RESTRICTIONS LIFTED BY JAPAN

Senate Resolution calls on Obama to intensify help to end import restrictions Washington, D.C. ... More than a dozen U.S. Senators, including Idaho's Mike Crapo and Jim Risch, say that Japan is not abiding by internationally recognized standards by restricting U.S. beef exports. They are calling on Japan to open its markets to more U.S. beef and say the Obama Administration should do more to ensure that American beef producers are being treated fairly by the Japanese. A Sense of the Senate Resolution introduced notes that in 2003 Japan was the largest customer for American beef producers, importing $1.4 billion in U.S. beef before concerns over Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) from one Canadian-born cow resulted in Japan restr... more

SENATORS WANT TIMEOUT ON MONUMENTS

Crapo, Risch say collaboration should drive land use questions Washington, D.C. ... Locally-produced collaboration and consensus should drive decisions made about changes in federal land use, say Idaho Senators Mike Crapo and Jim Risch. Both Senators have written Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, asking him to discard a federal process of designating national monuments that too often utilizes a "one-size-fits-all" mentality that does not provide for local input. The letter comes as the Obama Administration contemplates plans to potentially designate as much as 13 million acres of public and private land as national monuments. A copy of the Senators' letter is below: Dear Secretary Salazar; We write in response to rece... more

Enzi: Training and Education are Key to Equal Pay

Cites Wyoming successes at pay equity hearing Washington, D.C. ... The path to closing the earnings gap between women and men lies in providing the skills and training needed to enable more women - and men - to enter new higher-earning jobs, not burdening employers with new, unfunded mandates, said U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., Ranking Member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee. The amendment comes as the Senate begins debate on H.R. 1586, related to the reauthorization of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Racing dogs to death

People everywhere watched in awe recently as Olympic athletes skied for miles, skated for hours and performed amazing physical feats. But even gold medal winners wouldn't be equal to what the dogs in the Iditarod will be forced to do in the next few weeks. There's nothing sporting about an event in which animals routinely die, as they do in the Iditarod. One dog has already collapsed and died from gastric ulcers during this year's "Junior Iditarod," a test run for young mushers. It's time for this grueling race to be relegated to Alaska's history books. The Iditarod's 1,150-mile course means that dogs run more than 100 miles a day for almost two weeks straight. They must pull heavy sleds through some of the worst weather conditions o... more
