Chinese "Emperors and Empresses" are coming to Los Angeles for the holidays

Pasadena – Hundreds of children, coming out from a Sesame St. Live show in the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, found a wonderful surprise: two Chinese lions were dancing at the Garfield Promenade, just across the street. New Tang Dynasty Television (NTDTV) in Los Angeles was holding an opening ceremony for its information booth inside Paseo Colorado. The children were delighted.

The booth is a reminder that the world-renowned Divine Performing Arts company will perform 8 shows of the "Chinese New Year Spectacular," at the Pasadena Civic from December 30, 2008 to January 4, 2009. Both NTDTV and the Western US Falun Dafa Association are sponsoring the show.

Chris Lee, the director of NTDTV in Los Angeles, announced that, "children can celebrate the holidays not only by meeting Santa Claus, but also Chinese Emperors and Empresses!" At the information booth a couple were dressed in the garb of ancient "emperors and empresses" while several children excitedly took pictures with them. These "emperors and empresses" will come to the booth every weekend from 1 to 5 pm, and more will be appearing at Costco next month.

NTDTV is an independent, nonprofit Chinese-language television broadcaster established by overseas Chinese with the goal of fostering understanding between Chinese and Western societies and promoting appreciation and awareness of traditional Chinese culture. Having ancient "emperors and empresses" join in celebrating the holidays is just one approach to sharing traditional Chinese culture and values.

Our biggest event this year is the coming Divine Performing Arts´ Chinese New Year Spectacular," said Chris Lee, "In a two and a half hour feast to the eyes and ears, the audience will experience the beauty and wisdom of the East. Each resplendent tale awakens us to the traditions that permeated Chinese history." The Performances include large-scale classical Chinese dance, Chinese folk dance, instrumental and vocal ensembles, as well as an enthralling erhu (Chinese violin) solo.

Everyone who has seen the show has loved it," said Vivian Duan, who has been collecting audience feedback. "The stage is like a window for the audience to enter another world. They even forget where they are."

A couple of young tourists from China left their shopping when they saw the booth. "We were so excited to hear the Chinese music and see the Chinese lion-dancing. We want to know more about how oversea Chinese live in Los Angeles," they exclaimed. "I can tell that these performances enjoy more freedom than what we see inside China," added the husband after watching the highlights of the show on television at the booth.
