We can´t let FEAR (False Evidence Appearing Real) keep us from joining in on the fun. If you´d like to step into fitness, here are 8 tips to get you on the box and stepping with success.
1. Be a copycat! Do exactly what everybody else is doing. How easy is that? You don´t have to come up with a new game plan. Just copy someone else who knows what they´re doing.
2. Three times is a charm! Everybody has to start somewhere. If you´re a beginner, remember that it takes at least three classes to gain some level of mastery. Don´t expect to be in perfect rhythm with the class right away; it takes time.
3. Pay attention! Watch the teacher (or people up front) very carefully. Follow the count, and repeat it silently to yourself. You´ll get the hang of it. An added benefit of Step is that you´re excercising your brain while you exercise your body. That´s right, the "focus factor" of Step enhances your ability to read, concentrate and recall information.
4. Break it down! Getting in synch with the music, and combining steps with hand or arm motions is a challenge. It might be easier if you don´t try to do it all at once. Learn the feet motions first, and then you´re ready to add the arm/hand motions.
5. Talk to the teacher! Be sure to introduce yourself to the teacher, and tell them it´s your first time. Often, the teacher will "spot" you and help you get the movements right.
6. Talk to yourself! Speak to yourself in a upbeat and enthusiastic manner. Make sure that your "inner voice" is a cheerleader, not a tyrant or a bully.
7. Don´t be self-conscious! No one is watching your every move. If you mess up, just keep going. Eventually, you´ll catch on and get into stride.
8. Have fun with it! Don´t be so serious that you forget to have a good time. Make your workout fun, so you´ll want to come back for more.
There is a lot more that could be said about step class, but here´s the bottom line: Come to class and give it your best shot. Before you know it, you´ll be stepping all over that box, and having a great time with the rest of us.
